Impulsive Fireplace Changeup

March 1, 2022

I struggle to balance my desire to keep a clean, tidy house with the desire to make my house completely disheveled with projects. For a while now, I’ve wanted to give our fireplace a makeover but just haven’t quite figured out a plan for it. I can’t be sure but I think our fireplace has already had at least one makeover since our house was built in the early 2000’s. It’s fine, it’s just not my style and aesthetic. I stare at this fireplace for long periods of time trying to figure out what to do with it. I think the thing that bothers me the most about it is the competition between the browns and grays – I really can’t put my finger on it but somethin’ ain’t right. I think this is where some actual design training or education might help but — here we are. Plus our family has priorities like travel and making memories with friends, so I’m always trying to minimize the dollars spent, especially on projects where I’m still not sure what I want to do.

So one day, I decided I was just going to ‘go for it’ and paint the stone surround. I really would have liked to paint it with a brush or roller but because of the stacked stone texture, I knew that wasn’t really an option. I set up a super sophisticated overspray protection barrier using my favorite plastic tablecloths, some paper bags, some cut up boxes, and other random items. You know, just like the pros do it! I opened up the windows and gave myself the pep talk. Does anyone else have major anxiety about that first paint contact with its target? Man, I sure do. I even texted one of my besties for some moral support.

Since I was just using a can of spray paint from the local hardware store, my color options were limited. I chose white and it’s probably not the right shade but I think it looks tons better than it did before! Husband had no idea that I was going to paint the fireplace – heck, neither did I when I woke up that morning! I quickly cleaned up all the evidence and waited for his arrival. The jig was up as soon as he walked through the door because he could smell the fumes but he liked it! At least that’s what he said. I still don’t love it, but it’s better than it was and I’ll take progress any day!

This space is in a two story living room and has built-ins flanking each side (which are also in need of a revamp). So, what do you think? I’m taking suggestions for a full makeover 🙂
