Found Vase DIY

March 9, 2022

I love the look of those big gorgeous textural vases but can’t handle the price tags on most of them. So I thought I’d try my hand at the Found Vase DIY several IGers I follow have done. I’d seen Jaci from @jaci.daily use spray paint and dirt — yes, DIRT– and Ashley from @modernly_you use baking soda and latex paint.

For my first attempt, the Jaci Daily method, I used a white glossy vessel I’d picked up from a home discount store years ago. I already had some black spray paint laying around so I used that. After the black paint dried, it seemed very ‘flat’ so I had some Heirloom white spray paint that I lightly used to add some dimension. You can see below though that the glossy finish on the vessel made the paint not really want to stick. So I lightly sanded it and then repeated the whole process again.

Then comes the fun part, playing in the DIRT. Here in NC, we have lots of clay, which is very red and not quite what I wanted. Luckily, we had some yard work being done at the time and they uncovered some not-so-red-clay I was able to use. I mixed that with some other darker topsoil I found and water – MUD time!

Let the mud dry, then wipe it off as you see fit. Doesn’t need to be perfect at all! I used a slightly damp towel but made sure to leave some spots with more dirt. I’m pretty happy with the finished product. However, even though I used a spray paint meant for all surfaces, it didn’t really stick even after I lightly sanded and repainted. I love the shape of this one though so I might try again using the below technique.

For the second attempt, I tried a technique I saw Ashley from @modernly_you use to make gorgeous textures using latex paint and baking soda! I thrifted a vase for less than $20 and wanted to try it. I used a paint sample I already had from another project and just mixed in baking soda until I got an almost oatmeal-like consistency. This is seriously the EASIEST DIY ever! You just slap the paint on! You don’t want it to be perfect and texture is what we’re after here so don’t smooth it out!

When I finished, the texture was great but there wasn’t much dimension to it. So, you know what I did, right? Yup, rubbed some dirt on it! I also think I chose a color slightly too dark but, oh well! It was a relatively inexpensive and not too time-consuming project. So, what do you think? Would you give it a try?
