Our home has these weird niches that are all framed in, have fancy plinths, and recessed lights. They’d be great for displaying sculptures or something. But I don’t have those. I’m not that cool, hip, or artsy. I also hate buying stuff just to fill space, it needs to have a function for me. I’m not a minimalist, per se, but we’ve established that I’m lazy and extra objects in my home means extra things I have to dust and that is my LEAST favorite chore of all time. Note that this picture isn’t the actual niche I made over, this one is downstairs near our garage entry, but you get the idea.

One day I had an epiphany and I knew it was a good one! I was going to turn one of the niches into a plant growing area inspired by Carmeon Hamilton (@carmeonhamilton) and Shavonda Gardner (@sgardnerstyle). They both have fancy grow lights for their plant babies. I bought a plant grow light that screws into the recessed light instead of a standard bulb. I got mine at Lowe’s but it’s actually cheaper on Amazon right now. I had seen (and fallen in love with) this gorgeous Genevieve Gorder wallpaper but it was too spendy so I found this significantly more affordable peel and stick version and thought I’d give it a try. I didn’t want to buy a ton of wallpaper so I decided to paint the sides and the bottom of the niche with a gray paint I already had on hand. I actually can’t even remember the name of the color – possibly Kendal Charcoal from Benjamin Moore? Anyway – I thrifted a few risers to provide some visual interest and bought some relatively inexpensive, yet hearty, plants to put in there. Against my better judgement, I really wanted to try a lavender plant there – spoiler alert – it didn’t survive.

The process of hanging the wallpaper wasn’t all that hard but I have to say I had a hard time getting the pattern to line up. I used a small plastic putty knife to smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles. It looks great from far away. It’s a 95% project though. Because there is a small section at the top of the left panel that is still missing wall paper. I was getting frustrated with trying to get the pattern and remnants of the paper to match up so I just walked away from the project. And left it like that. The materials are still rolled up under my bed. Maybe admitting this on the internet will spur me to finish it, but probably not anytime soon if I’m being honest.
