Spring One Room Challenge: Week 4

Week 3 Recap

When I originally started thinking of design for this room, I loved the idea of a floating credenza with doors – something to hide the “stuff” but not clutter up the floor (plus, it’s easy to clean under there). In my mind, the easiest thing was to get some of the popular IKEA Besta cabinets and either order doors from somewhere like SemiHandMade or hack the IKEA doors. But when I started showing Husband what I wanted, he scoffed. You see, he’s got a thing against particle board furniture. So often my IKEA hack dreams don’t happen. I’m not mad about it, my DIY skills are abysmal and so is my motivation. Anyway, he decided he could make it fairly easily and affordably so, he did. I’m not joking, it seemed like once he made his plan and got the materials, he was done in about 2 hours. I actually don’t know how long it really took him but it was lightning fast to me!

This edge banding is a super thin strip of wood!

My vision for the doors is pretty basic, just fluting and some simple handles. But pole wrap is always on back order and when we ordered some for the doors for the built ins, I hadn’t finalized my door plan for the credenza so we didn’t order enough. And now it’s out of stock again. So, for now, we’re just going to do painted plywood doors. The entire credenza will be the same color as the walls and ceiling (I think the fancy term for that is “color wash”). The top of the credenza will be butcher block to match the desk and bookcases.

Week 4 Plan

We’ve got all the MDF primed and some of the plywood, but since I ran out of primer, I’m probably just going to rely on the paint and primer in one to do the trick for the parts that didn’t get primed. We’ll see how that holds up. We’re getting the room all prepped for Husband to spray the walls and ceiling this weekend! I’m not participating in that adventure because I’ll be away, running through the woods for a very long time (race recap to follow). But it’s gonna be very exciting to come home on Sunday night and see the transformation!

You can keep up with this transformation (and my misadventures in running) on my IG page @dont_should_on_me

I also hope you check out all the other super creative folks participating in this season’s One Room Challenge! It’s been really fun for me to meet new people and be inspired by what they’re creating.
