Spring One Room Challenge: Week 6

Outside of the actual build weeks, this week feels HUGE to me. I finished painting the built ins, wallpaper, and we got the overhead light installed! Well, the wallpaper technically took me past the “week” mark on Wednesday, but we’re not gonna get caught up in the details, ok? I really wanted to be able to wrap this all up in one post.

There’s nothing exciting or interesting to say about painting the built-ins. It just takes a long time. The paint is from Home Depot color matched to Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze. The end. Oh wait, one more thing — let’s take a moment to appreciate Husband’s increasing skills making inset cabinetry! I wanted something fairly simple but wanted to add the fluting detail of the pole wrap and I think he nailed it! I still haven’t decided on hardware but I’m of the mindset that the right thing will come along, I just need to be patient.

The light install was tough and I didn’t get any photos or video of the install process because we were too busy trying not to drop the 20+ lb fixture (I think it’s closer to 30 lb but I don’t want to be accused of exaggerating). Husband was doing the wiring and my strapping 15 year old and I tried to hold it over our heads for a long, long time. We never had overhead light in this room so it’s a very exciting development. And, it casts such a pretty pattern onto the ceiling. If you’re not considering the shadows when you choose light fixtures, I urge you to start doing that. It seems a bit obsessive and a detail not worth worrying about but I assure you, it makes a huge difference! Admittedly, it’s probably something you won’t notice unless the shadows are weird and annoying and then you won’t be able to unsee it.

Once I really got going, the wallpaper install wasn’t so bad. The hardest part was getting the first panel straight and then the corners — oh, the corners. I didn’t do the install all in one go but I’d say that the install took about 4-5 hours total. And oh my gosh does it look amazing!!

At this point, I’ve pretty much decided that the room color (Sherwin Williams Poised Taupe) isn’t right. I wanted to wait until I got the wallpaper up to be sure — and now I’m sure. I even pulled in the rug and chairs to try to convince myself to like it. The color is beautiful but it just doesn’t “feel” right and I’m working on trying to trust that part of me. So now I have to go back to square one with paint colors but this time with a LOT less time to choose. So next week will be (hopefully) more painting, staining the butcher block and base cabinet tops, and final selection of window treatments.

I hope you’re enjoying the process so far and please go check out all the other talented humans taking on this season’s challenge here.
