One Room Challenge Week 8

Reveal Week!

Wow, wow, wow! I can’t believe it’s the end of our very first (and hopefully not last) One Room Challenge! I’m so glad we decided to go for it because I personally need the accountability to stay on task. And the challenge allowed me to connect with so many other supportive folks also pushing themselves outside their comfort zones. If you remember from the Week 1 post, we wanted to upgrade our office so it could not only function more effectively as an office but also as a secondary lounge space and a flex sleeping space if we needed it in a pinch. We wanted something calm, moody, but not overly so – Husband doesn’t want to fall asleep while he’s trying to work in there, lol.

I’ll try to link as many things as I can at the bottom of the post but much of this room was thrifted, built by us, or collected over the years, and in some cases, rescued from the side of the road. *This post may contain affiliate links – I may earn a small commission (at no cost to you) if you purchase through those links.

Let’s take a closer look around, shall we? Let’s start with this stunning House of Hackney wallpaper that is worth every penny, including the foreign transaction fees. And the pendant. I really wanted to be able to light up the workspace in a way I hadn’t seen all over the inter webs. The pendant is so subtle but a very interesting detail when you get a little closer. I think I’ll eventually put some art here in this desk arch but for now, I’m just soaking it in. Also, I’ve never really mixed patterns before so this was a stretch for me. I wanted to balance out the floral wallpaper and keep the room from feeling too feminine and this Chris Loves Julia x Loloi rug fit the bill. And don’t forget these rug grippers to keep the rug from sliding!

Styling these bookshelves was a JOB. Styling is my least favorite – because it doesn’t come easy and I hate having stuff for the sake of stuff. I’d rather the things I have in our home have meaning to us. So many of these items are thrifted, shopped from our home, or pieces we’ve picked up over the years.

Art: top left woman: public domain from The Met Museum printed on Giclee paper from mpix and in a repainted thrifted frame; middle left: a photo I took on a run one frosty morning and mounted in a clearance Walmart frame; lower left: painted by my youngest a few years ago; right bookcase: public domain from The Met and mounted in thrifted frames.

Other items: The plate on the right bookshelf is from Spain (a gift from my brother-in-law and sister-in-law); wooden bowl with lid – this is not where I originally bought it but I can’t find the link and I’m pretty sure this one is the same; marble object; candlesticks; white bowl – I definitely did not pay full price for this and there’s currently a summer sale happening, just saying; tiny USB rechargeable lamp; compote bowl; fox wall mount (on the right hand shelf); the remainder of the items are either thrifted or I can’t find links for them.

Let’s continue our tour to the credenza. We originally had a plan to cover the slab doors with pole wrap but it went out of stock before we could order it so we just painted the plywood. And if I’m being honest, I kind of like it being just plain! I also had a different mirror in mind here but then I found this one at Goodwill recently (for $8!) and it’s perfect here.

The art is public domain from The Met Museum in a thrifted frame; cutie marble dish; fun lamp.

Is anyone wondering how I have rainbows all over my walls?! These little prisms are so fun and I hang them from the window hardware with fishing line so you can barely tell.

The right side of the room is the front of our house so we needed some type of window coverings. When I was dreaming up the design, I really wanted black velvet curtains but I realized after we started the bookcase install that there really wouldn’t be room for a curtain rod to go across and leave room for the drapes to hang properly. In hindsight, there was probably still a way to make it work, but alas, here we are. These light filtering Roman shades in the color Jasper Coal are very sleek though, don’t ya think?

I found the table on the side of the road and painted it black. The lamp is a FBMP find and the chairs are temporary placeholders for us until we’re ready to invest in furniture. Finding a not-ugly trashcan is always an adventure, but this one’s nice. And you can’t go wrong with a sleek white planter.

And let’s get one more good look at the whole room one more time before you go check out all the other One Room Challenge reveals 🙂
